The challenge
A 1900s solid-wall mid-terrace with draughts, cold rooms, and an ageing gas boiler. Solid walls are among the most challenging retrofit scenarios in the UK — internal insulation has trade-offs, and the homeowner needed honest advice on what was and wasn't worth doing.
Our approach
We assessed the fabric first and identified two rooms with the worst cold-wall effect. We proposed internal wall insulation for those specific rooms rather than the whole house — reducing disruption and cost while targeting the biggest comfort gain. A new high-efficiency condensing boiler and loft insulation completed the package.
The results
EPC improved from F (28) to D (62). Annual saving of £680. The two insulated rooms went from being barely usable in winter to comfortable throughout the year. Customer opted to leave the rest of the house uninsulated for now, with a clear plan for the next phase.

“They were honest that a Victorian terrace with solid walls is never going to be easy to insulate. They explained the trade-offs, we chose internal insulation for the two coldest rooms, and the difference has been remarkable. Rooms we barely used are now comfortable.”
